Wellness Club — Ticked Out Treats
Abingdon, VA. -
Sunday, Oct 1, 2023.
Halloween is a fun filled day full of costumes, creativity and, of course, tons of candy. With a little creativity, you can find fun ways to include some healthy options in the mix, whether you’re having a party with friends or trick-or-treating in the neighborhood. Keep in mind Halloween is just one day a year, and it is what we eat every day that has the most impact on nutrition and health. Instead of making candy and sweet treats off-limits, aim to serve up nutritious foods first.
Before heading out to trick or treat serve up a meal or snack that features fiber, lean protein, and healthy fats.
• For a light snack option try creating a snack board that features orange produce, such as carrots, sliced bell peppers, clementines or baked sweet potato fries. Serve with guacamole “slime” dip or “spiderweb” salsa and sour cream.
• For a heartier meal option, try black and orange tortilla roll-ups made by layering lean ground beef and low-fat cheese on a sun-dried tomato tortilla. Layer in spinach, diced tomato, and peppers and simply roll up and bake in the oven until golden brown.
• Chili can be another filling option to feed a crowd and sneak in more produce. Add in roasted sweet potatoes, corn, and plenty of beans.
Try some of these ideas to find balance this Halloween and still serve up “tricked out treats”:
• Pumpkin pie dip made with low-fat cream cheese, Greek yogurt, roasted pumpkin and spices
• Baked apples or pears with cinnamon, nuts and honey
• Chocolate chip pumpkin bars made with whole-wheat flour
• Popcorn tossed with cinnamon, sugar, and festive sprinkles
• Warm apple cider with cinnamon sticks
• Smoothies made with low-fat vanilla yogurt and canned pumpkin
• Apple slices with a fruit dip made with yogurt mixed with canned pumpkin and pumpkin pie spice
• Mix leftover candy with whole grain cereal, nuts, and no sugar added dried fruit for homemade trail mix
• Go for fun sized candies, miniature cupcakes or muffins, and smaller cookies and brownie bites.
