December ushers in the beginning of prime harvest time for citrus. Winter marks the season when the picking is plentiful, and their flavor is sweetest. Citrus is known for being rich in vitamin C, offering nearly 100% of the daily requirement. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that protects cells against damage caused by free radicals, as well as supports our immune system and maintains healthy skin, blood, and bones. Most citrus is also a good source of fiber, which keeps our digestive system healthy and helps to improve cholesterol levels and maintain healthy blood sugar levels.

Try adding some zest to your menu with the following picks.

Grapefruit – A large variety of citrus, grapefruit ranges in color from coral to pale yellow. Grapefruit is a good source of vitamin A which helps us to see at night and promotes immune health. Natural chemicals in grapefruit can interfere with the absorption of certain medications, like statins, so it’s important to speak with your healthcare provider about whether grapefruit interferes with any medicine you are taking. The distinctive balance of sweet, bitter and tart flavors lends itself to sweet and savory recipes alike. Try broiling grapefruit halves and enjoy with vanilla yogurt for breakfast.

Pomelo – similar in appearance and taste to grapefruit, pomelos offer less acidity with a sweeter flavor and are the largest fruit in the citrus family. Like grapefruit, pomelos can interfere with certain medications. Feature pomelo in a sweet and spicy salsa and pair with broiled tilapia or give cocktails or mocktails a refreshing kick with freshly squeezed juice.

Tangerine – vibrant orange in color and easy to peel, tangerines have a bright and refreshing flavor that is typically sweeter and less tart than most varieties. Feature tangerine segments atop greens with roasted beets and walnuts.

Blood Orange – notable for their signature ruby-hued flesh, blood oranges add a beautiful pop of color to any recipe. With slight floral notes, blood oranges are thought to have greater flavor complexity than other varieties. Try featuring segments with broiled white fish and avocado slices.
