Warmer spring temperatures invite us to spend more time outside and signal the beginning of the picnic season. Planning a nutritious family meal on the go means looking for convenient and ready-to-eat options that feature more essential nutrients and less added sugar, saturated fat and sodium. Balance your basket with these picks.

Lean Proteins

A tip for selecting protein picks for your picnic spread is to look for ready-to-eat options. Cold cuts are a classic choice for sandwiches and wraps. Look for choices that are lower in saturated fat and sodium like sliced turkey or chicken. For a fresher taste, visit Food City’s deli department and ask for freshly sliced meat and poultry. Plus freshly sliced deli meat tends to contain fewer preservatives and sodium.

Include Food City Produce ShortCuts

Aim to feature lots of fresh produce in your picnic spread. For a picnic in a pinch, look for pre-made salad kits and ShortCuts to add to your basket. ShortCuts are washed, sliced and ready to eat – try options like snack cups or a fresh fruit and vegetable tray to serve a larger crowd.

Grab and Go Deli

For savory snacks and sides, look for grab and go deli options that offer produce. Deli salads like fresh cucumber salad is made in house and feature bright flavors with herbs, tomato and red onion for a pop of color. Choose from a variety of ShortCuts Snack Packs featuring fresh fruit, vegetables, nuts and cheese for a protein and fiber-filled snack on the run.

Whole Grain Breads and Wraps

For a convenient way to feature more fiber in your picnic, choose whole grains in sandwiches or wraps for convenient options that don’t require any preparation. Food Club whole wheat tortillas, whole wheat pitas and bread offer the complete package of nutrients for sustained energy. Fill with lean sliced turkey, avocado slices, and sliced raw or roasted vegetables for a satisfying meal.
